Island Information
Gozo, only a short distance off the North-West tip of Malta, offers something altogether different. Whilst only 25 mins by ferry, from Malta, it is much greener than its neighbour and enjoys an even more relaxed way of life.
The island's tranquil atmosphere
owes much to the fact
that the island seems
to have been largely untouched
by the passage of time.
Although only 14 x 7 kms
Gozo offers a remarkable
choice of options with
its flat topped hills,
steep valleys, picturesque
fishing villages and dramatic
shorelines including rocky
and sandy beaches.
Diving in the Maltese Islands
in recent years has become
very popular, with several
diving schools now operating
in both Malta and Gozo.
Victoria, locally known
as Rabat, is the capital
of Gozo, and is guarded
from its highest point
by the Citadel. This fortified
town owes its origins
to the Phoenicians, but
has been kept by various
colonisers during the
centuries.
Today the Citadel encloses
within its walls, the
Cathedral, the Law Courts,
four Museums and the ruins
of many ancient buildings.
The population of Gozo
amounts to about 35,000,
which is able to sustain
itself through its own
agricultural produce and
the local fishing industry,
which has not changed
over the centuries. Many
types of fresh fish are
available, especially
Cerna, Denci and Lampuki,
when in season.
You will be delighted by
the range of local Maltese
and Gozitan wines and
beers that are available
all over the island .
The cuisine, with specialities
like local rabbit, fresh
fish and lamb, can be
found in many inexpensive
quality restaurants -
you are advised to book
in high season.
We are sure that like ourselves you will have a great relaxing time on the island of Gozo.
